Bros and ladies, I can’t rightly contain myself, I’ve got a new track for you that’s a rework of one of my favourite Australian artists by one of my favourite Australian artists. You see the situation now? Mathematically speaking that’s TWO of my favourite Australian artists which is at least (and indeed at most) twice as many Australian artists as normally featured in my posts! Thomas William Smith nee Thomas William elevates the bpm, drops in some woodblock Tom (not an actual thing, probably) and drops about a hundred extra of those pitch shifted Banoffee ‘oh’s (you heard it first) across the course of the new mix. The two are no stranger to… Each other… and they’ve collaborated in the past with Oscar remixing William on his Deccan Technicolour Remixes record. Worth every cent if you’ve not purchased it yet and no less exceptional if you have.

This one’s a free download.

Even though it aint what we’re all holding out to hear (the new Oscar record slash EP slash release of the year) it’s still got the name Oscar Key Sung across it so you know it’ll be [at the bare minimum] interesting. It’s the second beat tape he’s dropped so rather than comparing it to most recent single ‘It’s Coming‘ you’d be better off putting it next to Tape Beats EP from 2011. This particular beast is a little dark and a little underground, which isn’t to imply that it’s unknown but more a suggestion that it reminds me of this. You’ve witnessed top flight music criticism here, I hope you were taking notes.

Oscar Key Sung back on another collab proving that he’s the Allday of the beats scene. Here aligned with future classic Brisbanite Charles Murdoch, he floats above the clicks, snaps and eventual synth blow outs that make for a refined three minutes. I’mma just sit back here with my san pellegrino in hand and get involved with this track for a little bit this morning. I can’t think of anything more palette cleansing for a Thursday morning than Oscar’s vocals, drained a little of their usual colour, and then filtered over Murdoch’s watery take on garage. The accompanying video is sweetly shot too, science in reverse and so on, and adds to the experience. You’re welcome, thursday friends.

I’m going to place these before you largely without comment. Actually you know I’m not going to be able to help myself, without a LOT of comment. Two new tracks from Oscar that are mouthwateringly good and are pretty indicative of the direction he’s heading. I think his strength lies in his constant evolution and we’re seeing the mid-to-end stage of his most recent metamorphosis. I’m rather glad to be able to share with you a talent as prodigious as this man so it’s hard for me to avoid gushing out something overly weighty and pregnant with praise. I’ll simply say that there’s a bright future for any individual who can drop tracks like these on a whim. The first is a slow building beast that speaks volumes about Oscar’s attention to production while the second is a cover of Miguel’s Sure Thing that doesn’t deviate too far from the original. The key lesson learned here though, is that the guy has a set of pipes on him. We always knew he could knock up a legitimate beat but this is a hell of a vocal showing. For those interested to see how this translates live then your time is nigh, come see him headline at FBI Social on Thursday, 30th May.

Ghostpoet + Melo doing their thing over an Oscar Key Sung beat. This is the future. Oscar Key Sung going global. Let’s be open here, isn’t it surprising that no other rapper has thought to sample an Oscar beat yet? You’re damn right it is! Excluding Brothers Hand Mirror, obviously, that doesn’t count.
