It’s pretty rare that I’d even bother to click play on a Bon Iver cover. This one was endorsed by the great Justin Vernon himself so I thought “why not?” and I’m glad I took the time to play it through because it’s cracking. It’s a straight up heart crushing, pianemotional three minutes and twentyone seconds. It’s said that ‘Birdy’ (ugh) is a 14 year old girl. When I was fourteen I was too stoked on Bombfunk MCs to have time for nu-folk but I guess these are different times of different tastes. It’s availale for purchase on iTunes.

Midway through the year I wrote an article about Mountain Man for the Spit Press, Sydney based streetpress for the creative individual. I’ve given that time to cool, but it’s been long enough. Here’s a song from Mountain Man. If you want to read the original article I wrote then click here and turn to page 18. It’s pretty funny. Not laugh out loud funny, more like “this bitter twenty-something is attempting to convince me that he himself is outside of pop-culture” funny. You know, like a hipster calling a hipster a hipster even though they are both hipsters. We’re all hipsters, some of us just don’t know it yet.

There are four songs available as free downloads from their Daytrotter session. Just click here and they can be yours.

Mountain Man are playing the Famous Spiegeltent in Sydney on Monday the 14th of January. I won’t be there as I’m away on camp but you should be there. It’ll be all time. Imagine the dead silence with these harmonies hovering above it.

“Like the shotgun needs an outcome
I’m your prostitute, you gon’ get some”

I guess I’m initially annoyed that I’m being accused of soliciting a prostitute. It’s slightly less insulting that the prostitute is an easy-on-the-eyes, internationally reknowned singer but I’m still having trouble coming to terms with it. Lykke Li asks the big questions; Can she outdo Emiliana Torrini’s Jungle Drum? Why are there so many phenomenal Swedish musicians? Does whorepop exist as a genre?

Women never make good music. There’s not a single current or historical female musical figure of any significance. It’s an empirical fact. I checked. Online. Obviously this is all untrue but if you’re a woman (or a man with a heart for justice) then now you’ve probably got your blood up and you’re ready to listen to Kyü.

I’d love to post exclusively about Sydney artists but there just aren’t enough to match my untameable work ethic so I’m glad to get the chance to do so now. Kyü are a Sydney band and have female vocals. I’m not sure why but I’ve always found it hard to get involved with a female vocalist. It’s probably because i’m a massive chauvinist pig. In this case I’ve been able to push past my prejudices.

Kyü get described as art-pop which is about as specific as the alternative section at a JB Hi-Fi. That said, I couldn’t classify their music and I don’t think we need to. If you’re reading Sounddoc then you’ve already got at least some small degree of trust in my taste. This is Kyü.
