The one man-band that is Tim Fitz is producing some pretty beautiful songs. When you download his Infinite Space EP (and you will, because it’s the always pleasing combination of awesome and free) you’ll quickly realise that Tim Fitz doesn’t stick to one single style or genre. The guy can play more instruments than I can name and I can name heaps of instruments. He’s a 20-something year old Sydneysider and he’s getting stronger with every release. I’d give you a track from his earlier EP but it doesn’t hold a candle to his most recent. Enjoy.

I’ve been sweating it out in anticipation of Chris Brown’s 2011 release F.A.M.E. Finally, FINALLY, it’s out. Obviously I’m messing with you. But shame on you for thinking that I’d write about Chris Brown just because I’m a MASSIVE DEAL in the record industry these days. Yeah, I’m talking to you Tim Watkins.

Here is a little something something to make up for getting your hopes up with all that Chris Brown talk. Hopefully this is more your sort of thing. It’s a band that Katie Brown introduced me to yesterday afternoon called Yellow Ostrich. Hopefully they won’t mind that I haven’t used their official press image.

They’re a New York trio and one of the three is formerly of Beirut so they come preloaded with indie-cred. It’s kind of what I imagine it would sound like if Taylor Rice from Local Natives had a solo project.. Their album is a sometimes chirpy/sometimes experimental thing called The Mistress. Sadly the digital album is exclusive to eMusic (which means it’s almost off limits to any Australians save the few still holding their eMusic account). They have two other EP that are free on their bandcamp which I’ve not listened to yet. Someone download the pair and fill me in.

Sometimes I read back over my own posts and I wonder what the hell I’m thinking.

Open wide your mind and appreciate Sydney based Solkyri. They write instrumental post-rock tracks that are well… they’re pretty rad. They’ve been around for about 5 years (someone correct me if I’m wrong) and they’ve paid their dues to the Sydney scene unlike many of the recent upstart fauxk artists that are falling upon us like a steady drizzle. It’s hard for me to get behind an artist that writes a few demos, gets picked up by a major then drops a debut EP. I’m looking at you Georgia Fair. Also, while we’re here, has anyone noticed a steady decline into cynicism on this blog over the past few months? I’m not sure who to blame for that. Let’s point the figure at musicians. Intertwined with that cynicism is a refusal to take responsibility for my actions. Wow. The vibe is getting weird in here. I’m out.

Download ‘This Can’t Wait!’ for free at their bandcamp. Better still, get the whole record. It’s “pretty cool”.

I know a girl. More than that (though that itself is significant for me this year) I know a girl who knows music. She said this about New Animal.

It’s different to all the repetitive “we’re artsy surf-pop” unearthed stuff that’s everywhere at the moment. That’s probably because they’re not australian- and we all know Australians are nothing on Great Mother America (although, at least we don’t kill palestinians*). It’s definitely not happy music. It’s interesting music. I can’t really think of any music that it ‘sounds like’ but that could be because Justin Vernon is constantly on repeat on my itunes, which doesn’t leave much opportunity for me to appreciate anything other than folksy “I’ve-lost-all-faith-in-love” genres. Or maybe they’re just new and different.

*She has retrospectively apologised for how grossly uninformed this comment was. She’s taking a Middle Eastern studies class this semester. Things are looking up.

Also, I recognise that I shamelessly work a Valar reference into a good portion of my posts about other bands but does the production here remind you a little bit of Make No Sound? I argue that it should. If you like what you’re hearing (or you don’t but you like the thought of a free album that you’ll never listen to) then download the full album right here. No charge.

Women never make good music. There’s not a single current or historical female musical figure of any significance. It’s an empirical fact. I checked. Online. Obviously this is all untrue but if you’re a woman (or a man with a heart for justice) then now you’ve probably got your blood up and you’re ready to listen to Kyü.

I’d love to post exclusively about Sydney artists but there just aren’t enough to match my untameable work ethic so I’m glad to get the chance to do so now. Kyü are a Sydney band and have female vocals. I’m not sure why but I’ve always found it hard to get involved with a female vocalist. It’s probably because i’m a massive chauvinist pig. In this case I’ve been able to push past my prejudices.

Kyü get described as art-pop which is about as specific as the alternative section at a JB Hi-Fi. That said, I couldn’t classify their music and I don’t think we need to. If you’re reading Sounddoc then you’ve already got at least some small degree of trust in my taste. This is Kyü.
