A few months ago Kristian Mattson (aka The Tallest Man On Earth) and Amanda Bergman (aka Idiot Wind) signed on to write a series of songs for a Swedish film called Once A Year. This was obviously fantastic news as any word that Kristian Mattson is doing anything at all in relation to anything at all is cause to fist pump and mouth off to to those around you (a la Lleyton Hewitt circa 2001). Yesterday I heard part of the first of the seven songs that they’ve written for the film, this one featuring Mattson in the foreground while Bergman delivers backing vocals and my word, it’s superb. If you thought Mattson’s voice on it’s own was a serious business, wait until you hear it entwined with Bergman’s. Initially it didn’t look as if a soundtrack would be released separately but director Gorki Glaser-Müller has since said that the songs have taken on a life of their own and could very well see a retail release. Nice one Gorki. The track you hear in the below film trailer is called ‘Some Will Spare You’

Have your mind, eyes, ears and feelings gently assaulted by the dulcet tones of the Wilderness of Manitoba. Preload this on a large monitor and some quality speakers before full screening it and hitting play. It’s pretty compelling. There’s something unrepentantly 80s about shooting with a faded out black backdrop but it’s refreshing in a time when “on the go” and “take away” sessions are all the rage. I don’t need to see a band performing their songs acoustically in a Nepalese cave, I just want to hear music that speaks for itself. It’s just one track from their Hear Ya session so if you’d like to download audio of the entire session then you can do so by right clicking here. Alternatively you can download just this track below.

Remember these cats? Back in September last year, you and I bonded over how much we really liked ‘Surrounded By Your Friends’ by Hooray For Earth. You downloaded it (without charge) and we all agreed that when you turned 18 you’d make the DJ that your dad hired play it at your party. Well reshuffle that playlist, friend, because Hooray For Earth are at it again. ‘True Loves’ is the first single from their soon to be released album of the same name. The record will be out on June 7 and it seems like it’ll bridge the gap between bands like Foster the People and Animal Collective.

The accompanying video clip is a mishmash of hyper-era costume and smouldering romance. You’ll dig it, audio and video alike.

Here’s a little something else from Dry The River to tide you over for the next day or two. This band seems to be moving from strength to strength at the moment. No word as yet on the release date of their debut full length but it surely can’t be far. They’ve been churning out live video after live video these past few months and the buzz is running high. They’d be foolish not to take advantage of it and release sometime soon.

I’ve got a real whiz-banger (of the gentler kind) lined up for you later in the week. Stay keen.

It’s pretty rare that I’d even bother to click play on a Bon Iver cover. This one was endorsed by the great Justin Vernon himself so I thought “why not?” and I’m glad I took the time to play it through because it’s cracking. It’s a straight up heart crushing, pianemotional three minutes and twentyone seconds. It’s said that ‘Birdy’ (ugh) is a 14 year old girl. When I was fourteen I was too stoked on Bombfunk MCs to have time for nu-folk but I guess these are different times of different tastes. It’s availale for purchase on iTunes.
