This post is about three things and all three of those things are Valar. There are two sub categories however, and those are the incredible yet two month old live recording they did of a never-before-heard track called ‘Uptight’ and the dramatic price drop of their debut EP. I’ll keep this short.
The song/video rules. The EP is now THREE DOLLARS. That’s a pittance. If you’ve been sitting on their bandcamp streaming their album, never dipping into your pockets for the necessary five dollars then now’s your chance to redeem your honour. That’s a two dollar coin and a one dollar coin. Mathematics. I know. Finance aside it was one of the very best EP’s released last year. Rawkblog certainly thought so.
Smash this into your eyes.
While I have your attention, here’s another new track that James played without the aid of the rest of the band during his particularly short American tour.
Matt Davis, you’re welcome.
Be it the guitar effects, arrangements or even the band’s name itself, so much about Olympic Ayres reminds me of Foals. Listen in particular to Black & Blue for serious Foals reference. There’s a free three track EP on their bandcamp with your name on it. I’m instantly more ready to like an artist with a bandcamp. The day that myspace is completely phased out and bandcamp is the go-to music service will be a day of great jubilation. They’re Sydney based so we can probably go see them play sometime soon. It’s not a date or anything but I might ‘just happen to find’ a bottle of red in the back of my car on the way home which I’ll swear I didn’t know was there. I’m pretty keen to see their live set- there are whispers that they’re only a two piece.

Remember Sleepyhands? Yeah you do! They’re a fan favourite here at Sound Doc and they’re back with a free Christmas tune for you to download for free without paying because it’s Christmas and because you’ve earned it for passing three out of your four subjects at uni this semester. Don’t get too excited though, you’re going to have to retake Geopolitics next year. Serves you right for spending 13 weeks of lectures drawing geometric shapes on your lined pad. Also, why did you bring just a pencil to the exam? It’s not multiple choice, idiot. Next time we’ll know better, won’t we. Listen and be merry.

There’s exciting rumblings going on beneath the surface for Sleepyhands at the moment so keep your ear to the ground over the next few months. What I can say for sure though, is that they should be appreciated live. You can mark these dates into your moleskines: December 17 at the Spectrum and January 15 at Oxford Art.

I don’t know why so much is made of the fact that Jonathan Boulet is 22. It’s not that young. Old mate from Tim & Jean is 12 or something, isn’t he? That‘s young. Two things should be said though: when I say 12 I’m exaggerating and Jonathan Boulet has more than the combined talent of Tim AND Jean.
After releasing his hugely successful self titled debut album, Boulet is back with a new single called You’re A Animal. While I don’t absolutely love the recording you can bank on it being enormous live. The first time I saw J. Boulet was at Manning Bar late last year in support of the recently discussed Middle East. The energy of his live show was pretty attractive so I can’t wait to see how the pace of this You’re A Animal fits into his set. You can catch the tail end of the You’re A Animal Tour on any of the below dates.
December 3 – Newcastle – CBD Hotel
w/ Grace Woodroofe, Nova and the experience
December 4 – Sydney – Beach Road Hotel
w/ Grace Woodroofe, Megastick Fanfare
December 9 – Brisbane – Alhambra Hotel
w/ Grace Woodroofe, Sunshine Ensemble
December 10 – Adelaide – Uni Bar
w/ Grace Woodroofe, Jimmy and the Mirrors, East End Villians
December 17 – Melbourne – The East Brunswick Club
w/ Grace Woodroofe, The Parking Lot Experiment
At 3:30 this morning Valar, with your best interests at heart, uploaded a new track to their bandcamp. It’s called Make No Sound, ironically named since the song itself is full of sound – probably a good thing since four minutes of silence would arguably be the most pretentious thing Valar have released so far. On top of this, John Cage would probably sue for copyright were he still alive. It is however, a step forward for Valar being unlike any other recording they’ve released so far. Enjoy.

If you haven’t already then be sure to download a few more of Valar’s tracks [for free] here. They also have a blindingly good EP for sale too. Get behind it and spend a tiny bit of coin.
