All we have here is a pair of voices and a Rhodes but my word, I’m liking what happens when the two combine. Seriously, the warmth of that Rhodes sound is enough to fully account for the torrential downpour that’s going to ruin the football I’ll be playing on this, on Darling Harbour this evening. No joke. I don’t pretend to understand the chemical release activated when that Rhodes tone hits my primary auditory cortex but I do get more than appropriately excited, I’ll say that. The party responsible for this recording are a pair of brothers called Mrs Bishop. Hailing from Sweden originally (like The Hives whom they here cover), the duo now reside in Sydney making their particular blend of lilting pop.

You can also here an original of theirs called ‘Broken Wing’ which I don’t think quite as highly of, potentially because it reminds me of a few artists for whom I have very little time. They have a debut EP out at the end of next week and if they can keep the xylophones, glockenspiels and all manner of other twinkling sounds to a minimum, it may be pretty decent.

It’s well understood that I’ll write about anything that Freelance Whales do. I know it, you know it, they know it. They put out one of the better records of 2009 and have gone on to release a few off the cuff tracks that have suggested that their next record might be moving in a different direction to Weathervanes. Now they’ve covered Devo’s Girl U Want. It won’t rattle any cages but it will make you say “this song is a nice song”.

What happens when an 11 year old African American girl collides with a middle-aged, bearded Irishman? Nope, not criminal charges, the answer is James Vincent McMorrow covering Willow Smith’s Whip My Hair. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry as I listen to this but either way, it’s an interesting artefact showing where two very different streams of music are at in 2011.

It’s pretty rare that I’d even bother to click play on a Bon Iver cover. This one was endorsed by the great Justin Vernon himself so I thought “why not?” and I’m glad I took the time to play it through because it’s cracking. It’s a straight up heart crushing, pianemotional three minutes and twentyone seconds. It’s said that ‘Birdy’ (ugh) is a 14 year old girl. When I was fourteen I was too stoked on Bombfunk MCs to have time for nu-folk but I guess these are different times of different tastes. It’s availale for purchase on iTunes.

Cee-Lo Green (of Gnarls Barkley fame) very recently released this cover of Band of Horses ‘No One’s Gonna Love You’. I don’t love this version but it’s always interesting to hear a track I love done by another artist. Also, I’m no film critic but whoever directed this must have pitched it a little like this: “Look, this is what I’m thinking for the video. We have a really nice American road trip style thing. You know, diners, swimming, car scenes, all that crap. But here’s our angle. Amid all these scenes we’ll make sure we slot in some unnecessary boob action! Guys will love it. They’ll be enjoying the scenery when BAM! Breasts! This is going to work. Bigtime.”

Just in case you’ve not heard the original, here it is.
