Rich, emotional and as similar to Arcade Fire as one can be without breaching copyright, Margolnick hit me in the same way the Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang did mid last year: With balls. And before you leave comments saying “Did you just suggest that the Gaslight Anthem teabagged you last year?” I’m talking about weight. A little bit of bravado that isn’t there in much of the whispy dulcet tones of the Angus and Julia Stone plagued folk scene. Wait… You like Angus and Julia? Thanks to Dan Codyre who brought this gem to my attention. I recommend starting with track 3, ‘The Ladder’.

When the Welcome Wagon released Welcome to the Welcome Wagon they received critical welcome. Pastor Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique make very accessible, particularly religious Sufjanesque folk music. Sufjan himself produced, arranged and performed on the record so it should be no suprise that it sounds as it sounds. Here’s my favourite track from the record

This week the pair released four (semi) new songs for download over itunes with the proceeds going to Freeset, a fair-trade business in India that helps women escape the sex trade in Kolkata so that’s two reasons you should download these tracks.

Tonight, if you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, you’ll be seeing The Morning Benders at the Oxford Art Factory. They were almost certainly one of the most blogged about artists of 2010 and despite all my fiercest efforts to keep them off Sound Doctrine here they are. Receive this into your ears.

Lord Huron’s newest release is a slowly building version of the celebratory classic Auld Lang Syne. It’s an appropriate way for me to kick of the new year; it’s got a feel of optimism and it doesn’t ring too harshly in the ears of a late night warrior. You may remember Lord Huron from their earlier Caribbeanesque exploits. Worth a listen if you haven’t already. I was going to make my first post of the year something from deep within the annals of my music taste but that can wait until the end of the week.

Also, Raz Bradley this week claimed that Boy & Bear is musically better than Sufjan Stevens. I won’t pass any judgement on Raz for that comment, I leave that for the Lord our God at the end of days.
