It’s been a pretty dischordant run these past few weeks with some soul, folk, 80s electro and surf rock in there but there’s been nothing that spoke to those who want to hear catchy, easy pop. He’s not someone I’d normally think palatable for the SD readership but the combination of groove, superb self-production, pretty (though, warning, EXTREMELY poppy) vocals and free downloads was enough to think this worth sharing with you. He is Jhameel.

The same guy that has a degree in Arabic and a history with the US Army is now making Princesque pop (not to be confused with princess pop) and turning heads with his Hype Machine topping, toe tapping, head nodding, radio friendly, adjective inspiring tunes. And before you say it, I know those weren’t adjectives, but it sounded good right? Of course it did.

Without further introduction, here are a few of tracks from Jhameel, all available as free downloads. There’s plenty more to be had (also uncharged) from his Soundcloud.
Get on it. Seriously though, he’s a weird looking dude. Watch as this polarises my limited audience.

Here’s a band whose major single, Young Blood, I was pretty familiar with. It’s upbeat, it’s catchy, it makes you want to dance. Something I didn’t know however, is that their target demographic is 30-something year old drunken, obnoxious, average white folks. The crowd at their show last night were something of a cross between an aged, Riverview formal afterparty and the regular clientel of an Outback Steakhouse.

I had more beer spilled on my ankles than I’ve had at any other show in my life and I’ve seen my fair share of shows. Lyn suggested that we’d have saved money on drinks if we’d attached capture bags to our thighs and drunk of our pals’ spillage. A disgusting idea, given, but economically sound. They weren’t even dancing, they just didn’t possess the fine motor skills to perform the basic glass to mouth maneuver.

I think we realised it was going to be a bizarre night when we brought the wrong tickets to the show yet were allowed in nonetheless. Here’s a song you’ve no doubt heard from the strongbow ad.

“Like the shotgun needs an outcome
I’m your prostitute, you gon’ get some”

I guess I’m initially annoyed that I’m being accused of soliciting a prostitute. It’s slightly less insulting that the prostitute is an easy-on-the-eyes, internationally reknowned singer but I’m still having trouble coming to terms with it. Lykke Li asks the big questions; Can she outdo Emiliana Torrini’s Jungle Drum? Why are there so many phenomenal Swedish musicians? Does whorepop exist as a genre?

Melbourne band Boy In A Box have just one track (as far as I can tell). It’s called Moon Comes Up and it’s been bouncing about my head like a beachball at a Nickelback concert. It’s a little poppy, a little cheesy and it’s ripe to be a Triple J hit over the summer (has it dropped just a little too early?) but I just can’t argue with a chorus like this. My last post was a bit wordy so I won’t say anymore. Have a listen.
