What better way to start your first week back at uni than with a new track from the Middle East. It’s finally upon us. Well, almost. It’s our second taste of their sophomore record I Want That You Are Always Happy, due out on the 8th of April. Keen to hear your thoughts.

Be it the guitar effects, arrangements or even the band’s name itself, so much about Olympic Ayres reminds me of Foals. Listen in particular to Black & Blue for serious Foals reference. There’s a free three track EP on their bandcamp with your name on it. I’m instantly more ready to like an artist with a bandcamp. The day that myspace is completely phased out and bandcamp is the go-to music service will be a day of great jubilation. They’re Sydney based so we can probably go see them play sometime soon. It’s not a date or anything but I might ‘just happen to find’ a bottle of red in the back of my car on the way home which I’ll swear I didn’t know was there. I’m pretty keen to see their live set- there are whispers that they’re only a two piece.

This was the post that almost wasn’t. I didn’t want to write about this band because their sound is everywhere and they’re everyone right now. There’s not a whole lot creative, new or exciting about them but I’ll be damned if they don’t write a catchy hook. So, I guess inasmuch as I’m reconciled with writing about pop songs, I’m ok with doing this. Listen to these songs, consume them and move on. The pair of them are free at Unearthed.

And yes, before you say anything, I’ve also noticed that one of the band members (let’s call him Kyle) is wearing a native American Indian headband in the photo. Don’t shoot the messenger here, I didn’t dress the guy. That said though, it does fit with Kyle’s barefoot, freespirited, living loose lifestyle. Kyle can’t be tied down. Kyle can’t be held back. Kyle lives daily upon a dream. A few months ago he was at a party and a friend mentioned he’d love to own a dog. Kyle’s response was “can any of us ever truly own a dog?”. And I guess we can all take a lesson from Kyle. He fully understands what it means to be in touch with our own (or a completely unassociated and contextually irrelevant) culture. Maybe in their next shot he’ll be wearing a sailor’s cap. Nice one Kyle. Keep pushing those boundaries!

The new Middle East track Jesus Came to my Birthday Party is now available to download on itunes. Alongside the new single are two other new tunes. Western is an upbeat toe tapping country rock number that reminds me a little of Graveyard Train (and sees Bree’s vocals once again on the sideline) while Sydney to Newcastle is an instrumental with some samples of moving trains and station announcements. I couldn’t tell you if they’ll be included on the upcoming record but my gut instinct tells me no. Download the three unreasonably priced mp3s here.

Remember Sleepyhands? Yeah you do! They’re a fan favourite here at Sound Doc and they’re back with a free Christmas tune for you to download for free without paying because it’s Christmas and because you’ve earned it for passing three out of your four subjects at uni this semester. Don’t get too excited though, you’re going to have to retake Geopolitics next year. Serves you right for spending 13 weeks of lectures drawing geometric shapes on your lined pad. Also, why did you bring just a pencil to the exam? It’s not multiple choice, idiot. Next time we’ll know better, won’t we. Listen and be merry.

There’s exciting rumblings going on beneath the surface for Sleepyhands at the moment so keep your ear to the ground over the next few months. What I can say for sure though, is that they should be appreciated live. You can mark these dates into your moleskines: December 17 at the Spectrum and January 15 at Oxford Art.
