I hope everybody had a great Halloween. I know I sure did. I had a particularly scary evening spent out west. Something that’s neither Western nor scary however, are the melodious songs of Inland Sea, a band from the fiery Northern realm (I’ve been reading fantasy novels lately) of Queensland. Don’t even act like you didn’t love every bit of that segway. One moment we’re talking about Halloween then- What!? Did we just change topic!? I know. I know.

Anyway, Queensland, harmonies, violins, you’ll love it. They cite Arcade Fire as an influence, probably because they both have way too many band members to fit comfortably on a stage. A ten piece! Imagine dragging that around the country. I ‘spose the upside is that they can arrange some glorious five part harmonies. I guarantee- I GUARANTEE you’ll be hearing a lot more about the Inland Sea in months to come.

Here’s one of three tracks that they’ve made available for free download.

Valar have just released two glorious new songs titled Don’t Hold Back and Silverman. They’re both available at valar.bandcamp.com as free downloads so chase that up. As an added bonus for cinema fans, the two tracks are available as a 6 minute long feature film which is screening semi-exclusively right here on Sound Doctrine. Cast your eyes below. Margaret Pomeranz gave it four and a half stars while David Stratton simply said, “I don’t get it but I really like it.”

Freelance Whales released an album called Weathervanes last year that left a lot of indie-twee-pop loving kids foaming at the mouth. Honestly though, it was pretty good. They were then picked up by Dew Process in Australia who have done a sterling job getting their name out there. Yesterday they released a new track which they wrote and recorded in the van as a way of messing around with time signatures and it ‘goes alright’. It’s called Enzymes.

Longtime Sound Doctrine favourite Luke Webb has packed his bags and set proverbial sail for the Americas. He’s going to be recording a few tracks and playing a few shows as a prize for taking out the Telstra Songwriters Award earlier this year. Before leaving though, he gave us a farewell gift in the form of Blue Umbrella, a pretty track that’s available for [free] download on his website. I guess you could say I’m regifting it. Like the time Marcus Lockard tried to regift me an ps3 game I gave him for his birthday. I don’t even have a ps3. Massive bellend.

Everyday spinner.com gives away a free ‘mp3 of the day‘. Sometimes they’re horrible no name artists with five synth players, five vocalists and zero musicians but sometimes they’re a good thing. A few months back they gave away Hooray For Earth’s Surrounded By Your Friends. Ironically, it’s mostly synth and vocals but it’s a combination of a catchy melody and a nice slow layered build (and we all know builds are the new harmony). Download it for free here or download the containing EP on iTunes or Emusic.
