Jeremy Quentin aka Small Houses is all up on my radar like a thing that doesn’t utilise stealth technology. I downloaded ‘North’ from his bandcamp last month and it immediately found it’s way into a playlist titled ‘Song that sound like The Tallest Man on Earth’, previously populated only by Bob Dylan’s back catalogue (dude needs stop cutting TTMOE’s style).
Absent however is the lyrical ingenuity of TTMOE but that’s something that comes with time, I guess. It’s not like the lyrics are vapid rubbish but they don’t make your ears prick up like those of Kristian Matsson. It’s the combination of a smouldering voice and some cracking fingerpicking that drew me in.

I’m keen to hear what else the Michigan native has in store. His first full length North is currently in the works but for the moment you can pick up the appropriately named Just Before The North EP for a few dollars over here.
It’s been a few weeks since Daytrotter put out a session that I was particularly interested in. ‘Have they dropped the ball?’ I thought. ‘Have they no longer the pulling power to attract big artists?’, but they’re back (in my goodbooks) with a session from Two Door Cinema Club. It’s EXACTLY what you’d expect it to sound like. Unlike Tallest Man and Local Natives who both had crazy innovative sessions, TDCC are content just to strip it back to acoustic and leave the arrangement as it’s always been. Still, worth a listen. They’re the same catchy, cool songs we already love.

Remember High Highs? Here’s another free track from… them. It’s not much in the way of structure but if you’re looking for something to set your nerves at ease then this could be your goldmine. Whoa. I almost wrote “you’re goldmine”. That would have frazzled all my grammar fans out there.

I could find next to no information about him, so without wasting time, here’s what I assume to be an accurate though unconfirmed backstory to Leon Sommer.
Leon Sommer was conceived in 1984 as, having won $20 on a $1 scratchcard, his parents celebrated with drunkenness and accidental impregnation. Fast forward 7 years. It’s 1991 (simple math). A seven year old Leon Sommer first picks up a guitar. Within 11 minutes he’d written his first song, a wonderful track titled ‘Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Salmon!’. Lyrically it was exactly what people needed to hear at that time but another fifteen minutes later he recorded the track using a MacBook, some straw and several paper cups, renaming it ‘Sun Looks’. Shortly afterwards Leon was signed to Sony BMG. After a falling out between label and artist a lengthy court case ensued which left Sun Looks bound up in legal proceedings until mid 2010. Finally, Sony traded the rights to Sun Looks for several magic beans and Leon was able to take control of his music once more. In the August this year Leon Sommer was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for his work in astrology, having found the 13th sign of the zodiac. Leon now resides in Geneva where he is simultaneously the assistant to the UN secretary general and world bantam-weight boxing champion.

If you want to hear more from the man, the myth, the legend, then visit his bandcamp. His most recent collection of tracks is available for download with the option of paying nothing or something. I recommend you at least give him something. Heads up courtesy of Holly at East to West.
